FOCUSHow to efficiently and easily automate baggage drop-off?If issuing boarding passes has been now significantly optimized, the queues have migrated to the baggage deposit desks. Self-service baggage drop-off is the next step towards a fully customer driven process.
SIMPLE, FLEXIBLE AND FAST BAGGAGE PROCESSIER has imagined and designed an automated baggage drop-off solution that is very flexible, easy to install and fully compatible with existing baggage handling systems. The IER solution is simple and compatible with the different ways passengers use to check in. Should the passenger check in on a self-service kiosk, he/she will declare the number of bags he/she intends to drop off. The kiosk, equipped with a bag tag printer, will deliver immediately the number of bag tags required. For passengers that have already checked in on the internet, they will obtain their bag tags at a kiosk by just scanning their boarding passes. For efficient self-tagging, it is important that bag tags should be easy to install by the passengers themselves. The best practise should be in that case to eventually adapt the format of the bag tag and give passengers clear instructions to follow. At the baggage drop-off point, the passenger places his/her bag on the belt, where the weight and format are automatically verified. If the first bag is accepted, the system proposes the passenger to place a second one. Finally, if the passenger’s baggage does not exceed the weight and format, it will then be processed behind the scenes and continue through the baggage handling system normally. One major point of such automated processing is document verification, in order to check the identity of the person who drops off the baggage. One possibility can be having an agent verifying passengers’ ID at several drop-off stations simultaneously, another possibility can be using biometrics. The passenger’s fingerprint taken at the kiosk before the drop-off will be compared at boarding. The baggage process is in this way fully automated and meets the challenges that airlines and airports are facing today – reducing costs and improving passenger satisfaction.
